Solutions Architect
Interview Guide

Solutions architect interviews combine deep technical architecture knowledge with business communication skills. SAs must be able to design complex systems, explain trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, and connect architecture decisions to business outcomes.

Expert tips for Solutions Architect interviews

1

Architecture questions should always start with requirements: functional requirements, non-functional requirements (scale, availability, latency), and constraints (budget, compliance).

2

Demonstrate breadth across the stack: compute, storage, networking, security, data, and observability.

3

Solutions architects must translate technical complexity into business language — practice explaining architectural decisions in terms of cost, risk, and business value.

4

Show you understand migration patterns: strangler fig, lift-and-shift, re-platform, and re-architect — and when to apply each.

Solutions Architect Interview FAQ

Solutions architects work customer-facing, designing end-to-end systems that solve specific business problems, often across vendor technologies. Software architects focus on internal system design, code architecture, and technical patterns within a single organization or product. Solutions architects typically have broader but sometimes shallower technical depth; software architects go deeper into implementation details.

Solutions architects rarely need to write production code, but should be comfortable with proof-of-concept coding, infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and reading/reviewing code for architecture discussions. Prototyping ability is valued more than production coding.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate and Professional) are the gold standard. Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect and Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert are the GCP and Azure equivalents. TOGAF is valuable for enterprise architecture roles. The Professional-level AWS certification significantly differentiates candidates for senior roles.

Critical, especially at consulting firms (AWS, Accenture, IBM) and vendor-side SA roles. You must be able to present architecture to C-suite, defend technical decisions to skeptical engineers, and explain trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders. Practice whiteboarding and live explanation skills as much as the technical content.
