Expert tips for Data Analyst interviews

1

SQL is the core — master JOINs, aggregations, window functions (ROW_NUMBER, LAG/LEAD, RANK), CTEs, and subqueries.

2

Metric frameworks are essential: always clarify the business goal before proposing a metric.

3

When analyzing a data anomaly, frame your approach systematically: segment the data, form hypotheses, prioritize by likelihood, investigate each.

4

Always connect analysis to business impact — data analysts who explain 'so what?' stand out from those who just describe 'what.'

Data Analyst Interview FAQ

Intermediate to advanced. You should be comfortable with multi-table JOINs, GROUP BY and HAVING, subqueries, CTEs (WITH clauses), window functions (especially ROW_NUMBER, RANK, LAG, LEAD, SUM OVER PARTITION BY), and date/time functions. FAANG-level DA roles may also ask about query optimization and execution plans.

Not always, but it's increasingly valued. Basic Python with pandas for data manipulation and matplotlib/seaborn for visualization is expected at most tech companies. At smaller companies, Excel and SQL fluency is often sufficient. Python gives you a competitive edge — learn it if you're targeting growth roles.

The metric drop question is a structured debugging exercise: a key metric fell X% — why? Framework: 1) Clarify the metric and timeframe, 2) Segment by dimensions (platform, geography, user cohort, feature), 3) Check for external factors (seasonality, outages, competitors), 4) Form top hypotheses, 5) Identify root cause, 6) Recommend actions. Practice with 5 different scenarios.

Tableau and Looker are the most common in large companies. Power BI is dominant in enterprise/finance settings. For ad-hoc analysis, Python (matplotlib, seaborn, plotly) or R (ggplot2) are valuable. The most important skill is not the tool but the ability to choose the right visualization for the message and communicate insights clearly.
